ANNABEL LEE

(by Edgar Allan Poe)

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so,all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Desde a infância não fui
Como os outros foram; não vi
Como os outros viram; não pude
apaixonar-me numa primavera comum.
Da mesma fonte não sorvi
Minha tristeza; não pude despertar
Meu coração à alegria no mesmo dó;
E o que amei, amei só.

Então- na minha infância, no madrugar
Da mais turva vida – fez-se retirar
De todo o bom e mal profundos
O mistério que ainda me põe sem mundo;
Da torrente, ou da fonte,
Do cume escarlate do monte,
Do sol que me entornou, rodado,
Em seu outonal tom dourado
Do raio no céu
A atravessar-me em seu véu
Do trovão e o temporal
E a nuvem corporal
(A contradizer o céu azul)
Fez-se demônio em meu vitral.

Alone

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.

Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

O Meu Destino

Vivo de inquietações…
De sombrios desejos…
As minhas ambições,
andam traduzidas
nos rúbidos lampejos,
dos meus olhos em fogo!

Não cedem à agonia do meu rogo…
Andam fugindo ao meu destino.
Nem sentem os meus nervos estalar!
E os meus braços desgarrados
procuram em desatino –
sem nada encontrar!

Rasgo nas mãos doloridas,
escorrendo de luar,
as sombras espavoridas
que me ensombram o olhar!

Anda a loucura a desgrenhar-me –
o corpo e o pensamento…
As minhas horas, vão escurecendo
no destrambelho dos meus cuidados…
E eu vou andando
vagarosamente
os olhos roxos de sombra,
amargurados
demandando
tristemente,
o caminho,
do negro labirinto,
onde se perdem
os alucinados!
